A classic with everything you'd otherwise stop to look up already in the book: an introduction for today's reader, a short note before every chapter (or letter, or story), a who's who and a glossary, around the book itself. See real pages.

The book itself, never a retelling or a summary, and never rewritten into modern English. Each book prints its text from a named early edition, usually the first; a book first written in French comes in a named English translation, and the book says which. Each book's page says exactly what it holds: the edition or translation, and which chapters or stories are in it. The Note on the Text says which edition and how the text was checked. Our notes stand before each chapter, never inside it.

A note sticks to its own chapter. It tells you where you are, who's there and what to watch for, and it may say plainly what happens in that chapter, but it never tells what happens in a later one. If you'd rather meet a chapter cold, read its note afterward. The who's who introduces people as you first meet them; in Pride and Prejudice a few entries mention a later turn, so if you like surprises, lean on the chapter notes there. The Picture of Dorian Gray's introduction discusses the ending in one section, headed as a spoiler, which first-time readers should skip until they've finished.

A minute's reading: about 100 words before each letter in Dangerous Liaisons, about 160 before each chapter of Pride and Prejudice, a little over 200 before each Lovecraft story. Then you read the chapter straight through.

Dangerous Liaisons is Richard Aldington's lively English translation, first published in 1924. The Phantom of the Opera is the first English translation, published in 1911. Each book's page names its translation.

Each printed book is made for your order and ships within 14 days; carrier transit comes on top. In the US it usually arrives in about 3 weeks from your order, in Canada a little longer. Ebooks are emailed within 5 days. Your order confirmation gives the exact ship date, and if it looks as though we might miss it, we'll email you before it, and you can keep waiting or cancel for a full refund. Shipping details.

Not yet: the parcel carries no message from you. Send them a text or a card to say a book is on its way, and who it's from.

Email us within 30 days of delivery with your order number and a photo, and we'll refund you in full or send a replacement where we can. You won't need to send the book back. Returns and refunds.

Yes, for a full refund, any time before your book goes to print or, for an ebook, before we email it to you. If we might miss the date in your confirmation, you can cancel for a full refund even after printing.

Each copy is printed for your order, so we can't take back undamaged printed books. Cancel before printing instead: email us as soon as possible after ordering.
